What is the thought on externals on a3.7v camera. I use 3 1.5 volts now and seems not to get good life. Are the Li on batteries better to use? Do I use 2 or 3  as externals wired for 3.7 volts? If I use Li on I think cost would go down after a couple months. Does anyone use 4 rechargable 1.2v. What do you think best options are? Thanks.

I use the 3 alkalines for exts for over half my builds and no real issues as far as bad battery life.  I have had a J10 that came with a batt internal battery and since that was constantly losing charge it would suck the externals down with it.  I got a new batt off ebay for about 5-6 bucks shipped and no such problem since.  The Panny Fs5 I have has been running on the same set of 3 Cs for over 3 months and still reading full at last check...prob'ly over 3000 pics on that on currently.  I don't think the Fs7 is getting as good of runtime off of it's externals but it has 6 AAs and so not as much to begin with but I am starting to think it has more to do with the condition of the internal battery, as I know was the case with the Fuji J10.  I know a couple guys have been using ni-mh batts for thier externals and not experiencing any problems but I have not tried it myself.   And YES I have been trying out the lithium-ion 3.6 volt rechargables, size 18650 with a Fs42 and they have been working great so far that I can tell.  I know I got about 4000 pics before I changed the batts last time and the batteries weren't even dead but I just didn't know when I might get back to the cam and wanted to make sure it could fill up the card before next check.
So anyway...tried and true with the 3 alkalines is a good way to go(as I stated your problem may have to due with your internal battery failing to hold a charge and then draining the exts).
& the Li-Ion 18650s look like they may be a good way to go as well after my 3 months of experience with them so far.
One more thing I'd like to point out is,  I don't think there is a big difference in run time when useing either the li-ion or alkalines that take up approximately the same amount of space in the build(though depending on the case - the 18650s can fit into a shallower case but approx same footprint for 2 18650s vs 3 Cs which allow similiar amount of pics in my experience so far) .
