I have been having problems keeping any length of charge in my lion batteries.

I put them on the charger and the charge for a couple hours then say they are fully charged. A day or two in the camera and they are done.

Am I missing something?

Are you using externals? (this won't answer the original question but maybe lengthen the time)

Yes I am using externals but I also have one of these cameras (actually a J20) for a regualr hand held camera.  Same problem. Externals help but not sure about the life of these little bugers.

I guess this should be in the batteries forum though. Charles if you want to move this go ahead.

I guess my question should be how many times can they be recharged before they start loosing their effectiveness?

How many shots are you getting on a charge?  Or does it matter?  Does it go dead just sitting around for a couple of days?

To answer your question, you should get anywhere from 500-1000 cycles.  Manufactures vary what the tell you, and your results may not match your manufacturer's statement on number of cycles.

Here's a way to see what is going on:  Take a voltmeter and measure the voltage after it's supposedly done charging.  It should be at or close to 4.2V.  If it's lower or higher than that, then there could be a problem with the charger (or battery for that matter.)

Then after you use it and it goes dead, measure the voltage.  It can be anywhere from 3V to 2.75V.  If it's lower or higher, then most likely there is a problem with the battery.

If it goes dead after a couple of days whether you use it or not, then it's probably a bad battery.  But, it could be a problem with the external hack if the battery is hooked  up to the camera.

I had this issue, and it turned out to be the charger was not working properly, actually I had 2 chargers and both were not working, I ordered another charger with 2 batteries and solved my problem

Actually just got to reading this again and thought of something. I have a HP for a hand held camera and if liveview mode (screen on) is on then the battery goes dead within 20 pics or something like that. With it off get alot more. Here reading the manual it says this about it happening when in liveview mode.

You should also be able to turn down the brightness of the lcd or backlight.  The j20 uses a small battery.  Which camera are you using that is givng you problems.  Batteries do go bad and so do chargers.
