I was afraid I was going to hear that.  Will try again tonight.  These things are tougher than I expected.  I must have pushed the 'easy' button on mine.
He did solder much better last night.

I'd probably try rechargables again first (probably not them but try simple first and work up). My S40 does same thing and usually find the batteries even though they show good on the meter caused it. Use ones that work in yours (if not doing already) to rule out. Oh know you said using rechargables but for mine at least reg. batteries it simply will not do anything with. Possibly if the sa check to see first if maybe the solder job has a sharp spot pointing up (if covered with tape may see it poking up under it). All that is guessing but like said I'd try simple first.
(Ken, if thinking it was the sa not aligned wouldn't it cause it just not to power on any instead of doing what it's doing?).

Is the lens cover open or does it open when you power it up.  I will install the sa and then make ure it will power on and shutter a picture.  If this is okay then I will solder the wires tot he sa.

This is the one he ripped apart.  Lens cover is now open and super glued open.  (I believe, I will double check that as soon as I get home.)

In the meantime I had him take pictures of the SA.  Not sure you can see well enough but I'm posting them and maybe someone will see something amiss.

Nope not aligned.  You have tape on the solder points.

Ok, so the SA needs put in so that the solder points face down?  I must have gotten lucky when doing mine.
Actually going home at lunch and will get it out and put it in the correct way then.  Stay tuned...

Charles just watched your video again.  I thought we taped right where you did.  After aligning the SA in the video you taped over the solder points as well.  Is this something we shouldn't be doing?
Will re-align at lunch and see if we can get it lined up better.  I won't have him tape over them until I hear.

You are in the right spot but it is off just a very littler.  Make sure the sa conductor are straight and not bent.  If the sa is a little off left or right it will not work.  So you are trying to align with the ribbon conductor with the conductor in the sa.  Everyone thinks this is easy but I have had a hard time at times.

I think you are having a hard time understanding what I am saying.  You may have to put that sa in several times before you get it right.  Be careful not to stretch the white connector or you will have issues.

Ok here goes.  Tried moving left, right, and just about everywhere in between.  Right now, cam turns on.  (the light on top beside the Power button lights up anyway)  There are 3 lights beside the viewfinder.  The bottom one lights up and it sounds like it's taking a picture, then the camera shuts off.  Will work more tonight but any things to check from this little bit of info?

Yes but you can still have it where it will not work,  If it is one way or the other just a little it may not work.  If the conductor is crooked it can it cross between terminals.  I the sa is crooked it can cross between terminals.  I doesn`t take much.  His picture was real close but it was off to the left just a little.  The problem is you cannot see inside the terminals.

Your picture does help.  Look at the sa on your picture.  The conductors are straight and equal spacing.  When I get me sa they are in a bag and get a little roughed up in shipping.  So it is important to straighten the sa.  I was not criticizing you on how you do your hack.  I do mine very similar which is not what I show on the video.  I put the sa in the white connector and then just start the ribbon and make sure the conductors align.  Once aligned I push the ribbon the rest of the way down.  I am just saying there is no idiot proof way of doing this.  There are different ways to do the sa and the way you show it works.  I have done so many I just know where the ribbon aligns.  Just did one tonight with no problem.  I also checked the hack before soldering wires to the sa.  It must turn on and take a picture.  If not then the sa needs to be realigned.  I have had a few that I had to do 5 or 6 times for some reason to get them to align.

Sent you a PM Charles.  I think something else is going on.
