I have been converting my cams over to the 18650 battery on my lion cameras.  With the 18650 many of my cams will work great without the camera battery.  The f40fd, fx33, fx12, fx55 will work great with the 18650 battery.  I can put a 4 battery holder in and use just 1 battery or up to 4 batteries.  You have to by a quality 18650 battery or you are wasting your time.

I been using the 18650s alot too Charles. I have had good luck with them. I have found though that if I buy the protected ones that it is hard to find a holder that fits them well because they are a little longer. I started using the unprotected cells with protected holders and so far they have been trouble free. I do agree  that it is important to use quality Japanese made cells as opposed to the Chinese made ones.

I use unprotected by using a fuse link.  Just a piece of wire that will burn off if it is shorted.
